LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The 1998 Western Athletic Conference football media poll has tabbed Colorado State of the Mountain Division and Brigham Young of the Pacific Division as this year's favorites. It is the second year in a row the two teams have been picked to win their respective divisions. In the Mountain Division, Colorado State received 318 points and all but two first-place votes. The Rams were also picked to win the WAC Championship on 30 of the 40 ballots. Rice and Wyoming were the other two teams to receive a first-place vote from the Mountain Division. In the Pacific Division, Brigham Young received 294 points and half of the first-place votes. Utah, with 272 points, earned 14 first-place votes in the Pacific Division. Last year's WAC Championship runner-up, New Mexico, received four first-place votes. Colorado State University and several other schools including Pacific Division pick BYU have begun forming a yet-to-be-named conference which they will form in 1999 upon leaving the WAC.
