Coach Sonny Lubick's squad returns 17 starters from a team that finished 7-5 last year and lost the Pacific Division title and ensuing berth in the Western Athletic Conference championship game by a single point.

Steve Fairchild was named offensive coordinator Jan. 9, taking over for Dave Lay who resigned to become offensive coordinator at San Diego State.

The Rams return 47 of 58 letterwinners from last year's squad, including 18 players who saw starting action in 1996.
