Rams Look for Scrimages to Give them More Information

Friday, August 15, 1997

Fort Collins-- Colorado State football coach Sonny Lubick will get his first look at the 1997 Rams under game-type conditions Saturday afternoon. Lubick will put his 100-player roster through the first major scrimmage of preseason drills at 3 p.m. on the practice fields south of Moby Arena.

"It will be a good test for us to see where we are and where we need work,"Lubick said. The scrimmage is expected to last about 90 minutes.

Lubick also said a second game-type scrimmage originally set for next Wednesday, Aug. 20, will now be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19. The scrimmage will take place at 4 p.m. and Hughes Stadium and will serve as the final scrimmage prior to the Aug. 30 season opener vs. Nevada.

Standouts thus far in two-a-days have been senior WR Geoff Turner, senior QB Moses Moreno, and defensive linemen Greg Pollard, Joey Porter, Mike Mackenzie and Jamie Bennett. Pollard, a defensive tackle, missed last year with a knee injury while Porter made the move to defensive end from H-back during spring drills. Both Mackenzie and Bennett are redshirt freshman tackles.

Moreno ranks fifth in the nation among returning quarterbacks based on 1996 passing statistics. A year ago, he threw for 2,921 yards and 18 touchdowns. Turner led the Rams with 921 yards receiving in 1996, setting a school record with four consecutive 100-yard games.
