Softball Team Has Winning Streak Snapped

Sunday, April 6, 1997

Colorado State had its 18-game winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss at UNLV Sunday. The 18-game streak is the longest in school history - regardless of sport. The Rams are now 34-9, 11-3 in the WAC and percentage points ahead in first place in the conference.

Saturday, the Rams swept New Mexico. They took game one 5-3 in 13 innings and won the nightcap 4-1.

The Rams meet UNLV and New Mexico again this week, this time at Ram Field in Fort Collins. Friday the Rams and Rebels meet in a 1 p.m. doubleheader and Saturday the Lobos come to town for a 1 p.m doubleheader.

The Rams' 34-9 start is the best in school history. The 1989 squad, which set the Colorado State record with 37 wins in a season, was 32-11 after 33 games. Colorado State needs just three wins in its last 18 games to tie the school record.

With her win Saturday over New Mexico, senior pitcher Nikki Johnson set a Colorado State single-season record, eclipsing Kristy Wirth's 20 wins in 1989. Johnson was 1-1 Sunday vs. UNLV to make her record to 22-4 on the season.

Johnson also this weekend passed Stacie Stafford's 1992 school record of 168 strikeouts in a season. She now has 180 in 169.1 innings pitched.
