Women's Basketball season ends as Williams calls it quits

Wrapping it up--- Colorado State's season came to an abrupt end when the Rams fell to SMU 64-69 in the quaterfinals of the WAC tournament after earning a first round bye and were then by passed in the NCAA Tournament selection- The Rams finished the 1996-97 season with a 21-7 overall record and finished second in the WAC's Pacific Division with their second best conference record in school history at 12-4. The Rams posted their second consecutive 20-win season and fourth consecutive winning season, school firsts, and recorded their third highest win total with 21 victories.

Coach Greg Williams' Reign Comes To An End... Head coach Greg Williams announced today that he is stepping down from that position after building the Colorado State women's basketball program into a WAC power and putting Ram basketball on the national map. Williams was selected as the WAC and District VII Coach or the Year last season- He posted his 200th career victory against San Jose State on Feb-20. Williams put together a career record of 201-139 (.591). EarlIer this season he got his 100th victory as the head coach of Colorado state in the Rams' win over Hawai'i on Jan.16. In seven years at the helm he coached the Rams to a 108-88 (.551) overall record and a 46-53 (.465) record in conference play. Lest season Williams led the Rams to their first NCAA tournament bid in school history. It was the second,time in Williams' coaching career that he led a team to their first NCAA appearance; his first came while at the helm of the Houston Cougars in 1988.
