Women's Volleyball Weekly Release- 11/9

(Monday, November 9, 1998)

A look back at SMU: Colorado State University women's volleyball team allowed only 14 total points en route to a 15-7, 15-5, 15-2 win over the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University.

The Rams capture their 10th 20-win season (4th consecutive) as they rise to 20-5 overall, and 9-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Mustangs drop to 13-12 on the season and 4-5 in conference.

Junior Catie Vagneur set the pace of the match with 15 kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Senior Esther Langley hit .500 with 13 kills and only two errors on 22 attempts. Setter Katherine Pettit had a career night on the defensive end. The sophomore added a career high five block assists to her 41 assists on the evening. Junior Kristen Vance tallied 13 digs while Langley totalled a game high six block assists.

CSU kept all the Mustang hitters under a .106 hitting percentage and held the team as a whole to .000 hitting. Melissa Goodwin was the kill leader for SMU with seven.

"This is the most consistent ball we have played all year,"said head coach Tom Hilbert. "We hit the ball well, passed the ball well and had very few unforced hitting errors. SMU is a good team and the fact that we held them to a zero percentage speaks of how our defense played tonight."

A look back at TCU: For the second time in as many days, the Colorado State University women's volleyball team kept their opponent, in this case Texas Christian University, under .100 hitting percentage on the way to a 15-8, 15-2, 15-6 win this afternoon at Moby Arena.

The Rams, in their fourth consecutive 20-plus win season, improve to 21-5 on the year and 10-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Volleyfrogs finishes their road trip 4-21 and 1-9 in the WAC.

Junior Krista Swartzendruber set the pace for the home team, knocking down 14 kills with only three errors to total a .423 hitting percentage. Freshman Angela Knopf and junior Catie Vagneur split a 22 kill output against TCU to backup Swartzendruber's performance. Sophomore setter Katherine Pettit had 40 assists and five block assists on the defensive end.

For the Volleyfrogs, Amy Atamanczuk led her team with nine kills and setter Lindsay Hayes totalled 24 assists in the losing effort.

The Rams, who cruised through Southern Methodist University last night, stayed hot, especially on the defensive end where the home team tallied 21 total blocks. Senior Esther Langley produced 11 digs and five block assists while Pettit tallied nine digs and five block assists. The Rams held TCU to only a .054 attack percentage and 34 kills. They played similar defense last night against SMU, holding them to a .000 percentage.

"Our defense has gotten better where our offense was hurting,"said head coach Tom Hilbert. "With this group, we'll get our kills, but to keep winning our defense needed to strengthen and that has happened over the last few matches."

Season Attendance High vs UNLV: The Rams enjoyed their largest crowd of the season at Moby Arena as they entertained 1,748 with the win. The previous season high came on Sept. 2 against Illinois State. The Rams won that game, 3-0 in front of 1,574.

FOURTH-STRAIGHT 20 WIN SEASON: The Rams captured their fourth straight 20 win season with a victory over SMU on Friday. It also marks the programs 10th 20+ win season.

Conference Notes: CSU remains on top of the Mountain Division standings after the weekend. UNLV gave Rive their fourth loss in the WAC, strenghtening their third place position under Wyoming. On the Pacific side, Hawai'i knocked BYU of the top seat with a 3-2 win on Thursday.
