Monday, July 20, 1998
FORT COLLINS--The American West Program at Colorado State
University finishes the 1998 season with a talk on New Mexico
merchants and a discussion of Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett and Kit
Carson.
"Los Capitalistas: New Mexico Merchants and the Santa Fe
Trade," a talk by Susan Calafate Boyle, independent historian
from Fort Collins, will run July 21, and "The Western Hero and
Manifest Destiny - Boone, Crockett and Carson" by Paul Hutton,
history professor at the University of New Mexico, will be July
28. Both programs begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room C146 Plant Science
Building at Colorado State University.
Boyle's talk on July 21 will focus on the commercial
activities of New Mexico merchants before and after the Mexican
War, with an emphasis on the complex transactions and
sophisticated financing that linked Mexico, New Mexico, the
eastern United States and Europe.
During the July 28 talk, Hutton will explore the origins of
America's earliest sense of identity and national character
through the myths and legends of Boone, Crockett and Carson.
In conjunction with the American West Program, the summer
exhibit of the Curfman Gallery in the Lory Student Center is
featuring the artwork of William Henry Jackson.
