State Board Of Agriculture Approves Lease For Federal Natural Resources Research Center Campus At Colorado State University
Thursday, July 9, 1998
FORT COLLINS--The State Board of Agriculture today approved
leasing nine acres of land owned by Colorado State University to
enable construction of the Natural Resources Research Center to
begin. Federal officials said the project will save more than
$100 million over the next 20 years.
The Center will house a variety of federal agencies in
several buildings in a campus-like setting at the university's
Center for Advanced Technology. Combining these agencies at one
location is an important government reinvention activity,
increasing efficiency and saving taxpayer money.
"We are delighted that the State Board, in approving this
lease with the NRRC Facilities Corp., can bring to a successful
conclusion nearly 10 year's worth of talks and negotiations,"
said Judson Harper, Colorado State vice president for research
and information technology. "This project could be a model for
cost-effectiveness and efficiency for the entire federal
government. When you add the obvious advantages of the proximity
of this project to a research university like Colorado State,
it's easy to see why we're all pleased about this project."
Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with
the first building slated for completion in the summer of 1999.
The center's buildings will house several Department of
Agriculture units, including the Natural Resources Conservation
Service/Information Technology Services, U.S. Forest Service,
Office of Chief Information Officer-National Information
Technology Center, Agricultural Research Service and the Animal
and Plant Health Inspection Service as well as the Department of
the Interior's U.S. Geological Survey. The agencies will share
administrative and support services.
The Natural Resources Research Center will eventually occupy
a 30-acre parcel of land located north of Colorado State's
Veterinary Teaching Hospital on West Drake Road.
