Colorado State University Announces Commencement Activities

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University will present diplomas to 2,757 spring graduates at an all-university ceremony May 15 and individual college ceremonies May 15 and 16.

Former Middle East hostages Tom Sutherland and Terry Anderson will give the keynote address at the all-university commencement ceremony, scheduled for 3 p.m. May 15 at Moby Arena. Sutherland, an emeritus professor at Colorado State who in 1991 returned from six years of captivity to a hero's welcome in Fort Collins, and Anderson, former Associated Press bureau chief and best-selling author who was held captive for seven years, will speak about each individual's ability to effect real change in the world around them.

The ceremony will include remarks and conferral of degrees by Colorado State President Albert C. Yates. In addition, all doctoral candidates will be hooded and recognized. Diplomas will be given to 2,146 undergraduates, 413 graduate students, 124 professional veterinary medicine students and 74 doctoral students will receive diplomas. Twenty-nine students will graduate summa cum laude, 68 students magna cum laude and 129 students cum laude.

In addition to the all-university commencement ceremony, individual convocation ceremonies for each of the eight colleges also are scheduled for May 15 and 16. Following is a list of graduation speakers, starting times and locations for each college ceremony.

May 15 Professional Veterinary Medicine--speaker: Dr. Anthony Frank, professor and department head of the pathology department at Colorado State; 7 p.m., Moby Arena. ROTC Commissioning--speaker: Brigadier General Brian A. Arnold; 7 p.m., Lory Student Center Theatre.

May 16 Engineering--speaker: Fort Collins Mayor Ann Azari; 9 a.m., Equine Teaching and Research Center, 701 S. Overland Trail. Natural Sciences--speaker: Steven W. Horn, dean of agriculture at the University of Wyoming and Colorado State alumnus; 9 a.m., Moby Arena. Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences--speaker: Dr. James Collins, professor of microbiology at Colorado State and head of the virology section of the diagnostic laboratory at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital; 9 a.m., Lory Student Center Ballroom. Business--speaker: Colorado state Sen. Tom Norton; 1 p.m., Equine Teaching and Research Center, 701 S. Overland Trail. Liberal Arts--speaker: Dennis D. Phillips, associate professor in the department of speech communication at Colorado State; 1 p.m., Moby Arena. Natural Resources--speaker: Richard D. Laven, professor in the department of forest sciences at Colorado State; 1 p.m., Lory Student Center Ballroom. Agricultural Sciences--speaker: Robert G. Zimbelman, executive vice-president for the Federation of Animal Science Societies; 5 p.m., Equine Teaching and Research Center, 701 S. Overland Trail. Applied Human Sciences--speaker: David L. MacPhee, associate professor in the department of human development and family studies at Colorado State; 5 p.m., Moby Arena.
