Colorado State University Nutritionist Elected Fellow In National Organization
Thursday, April 30, 1998
FORT COLLINS--Richard Jansen, professor emeritus in the
department of food science and human nutrition at Colorado State
University, has been elected a fellow of the American Society for
Nutritional Sciences.
Jansen is one of only 10 individuals across the nation who
were elected this year. Election to the society is based on
cumulative contributions to the field of nutritional sciences
over the course of a career. During his career, Jansen has
conducted extensive research and published more than 100 articles
on food science and nutrition. He was honored by the society at a
luncheon in San Francisco last week.
Jansen's honors have included the Award of Excellence from
the Colorado Dietetic Association, the Western Dairy Council's
Award of Excellence in Nutrition Education and the Institute of
Food Technologists Babcock-Hart Award. Jansen also is a fellow at
the Institute of Food Technology.
Jansen became head of the food science and human nutrition
department at Colorado State in 1969. Jansen retired from the
position in 1990 and continues to be active in education,
research and outreach in the department. His work has included
research on effects of protein and energy intake on lactation and
research on fat synthesis and obesity. In cooperation with Jud
Harper, vice-president for research and information technology,
Jansen conducted research on the implementation of baby food
processing in less developed countries. He also has studied the
nutritional effectiveness of the national school lunch program in
the United States.
Jansen graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in
1950 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. In 1958 he earned a
doctorate in biochemistry from Cornell.
