Colorado State University Offers Environmentally Friendly Course In The Virgin Islands May 20-30

Tuesday, April 28, 1998

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University students and interested community members can study environmentally friendly design, technology and construction at a resort on the island of St. John May 20-30.

The founder of the resort will speak at 7 p.m. April 29 in Room 208 Lory Student Center on campus.

Stanley Selengut, founder of the most publicized eco- tourism destinations in the world, will discuss his resort development in the U.S. Virgin Islands as well as future plans for partnering with Colorado State on education and research projects. The talk is free and open to the public.

Colorado State University's Institute for the Built Environment partnered with Selengut to develop a course titled "Sustainable Practices Summer Study Tour." Participants will receive credit for the course and will participate in daily lectures, tours and a sustainable design, eco-tourism or resource project.

"We want to encourage the community to participate," said Brian Dunbar, director of the Institute for the Built Environment and associate professor in the department of design, merchandising and consumer sciences. "We'll study environmentally friendly practices as they relate to design, construction, building materials and daily choices. Participants will come away with the knowledge that anytime you inhabit a place, what you do can enhance or harm the environment."

Selengut has received national and international recognition for his resorts because of his experimentation with sustainable design, construction and innovative use of alternative energy and recycled materials.

"People who visit leave with a heightened sense of awareness of how their everyday practices affect the environment," Selengut said. "Many former visitors contact me to say thanks and to tell me they have changed their everyday actions to be more environmentally friendly."

Selengut's resort on St. John recently was named as the world's most environmentally friendly hotel by 18,000 travel agent subscribers to the "Official Hotel Guide."
