Multicultural Conference Will Explore Diversity And Common Connections
Thursday, March 12, 1998
FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University will join area
organizations for the premier Multicultural Conference, called
"There is a Common Thread that Connects Us All."
The conference, which will run 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. March 28 at
the Lincoln Center, 417 W. Magnolia St., will focus on how the
community can work together to build unity, honor diversity and
seek ways to respond to racial and cultural intolerance in the
region.
Registration for the conference is $5, which includes a box
lunch. For registration information, call Maria Gavier at (970)
224-6047.
During the morning, Jerry Smith, assistant director of
Colorado State's Black Student Services, will present the keynote
address.
"The Multicultural Conference will provide the means to
explore and build inclusive, respectful models of living for the
community," Smith said. "Government and legislation can only do
so much - it's up to individuals to work toward common goals of
appreciation for the wealth of diversity found throughout the
region."
A video will show the responses of other communities to
incidents of racial and cultural intolerance and will be followed
by discussions that will consider how to handle similar incidents
in the region.
Other events will include exhibits, dance, storytelling,
poetry readings and music. In addition, awards will be presented
to the winners of the Multicultural Commission's Creative Arts
competition for fifth- to ninth-grade students.
The Multicultural Commission is sponsored by Colorado State,
the city of Fort Collins, Chamber of Commerce, Poudre School
District, Poudre Valley Hospital, Larimer County and Front Range
Community College.
