Colorado State University Hosts Symposium And Celebration To Honor Professor's 50 Years Of Service

Wednesday, March 11, 1998

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University will host a symposium and an evening celebration March 16 to honor a professor whose 50 years of service have influenced the world's international education and development programs.

Maurice Albertson, Centennial emeritus professor, has served Colorado State as director of the Research Foundation, director of International Programs and professor of civil engineering. One of Albertson's most recognized contributions was his critical role in the formation of the Peace Corps.

"We need to be motivated by service as well as by profit," said Albertson. "We serve best by finding out what people want and helping them work to realize their dreams, not by going into a country and telling villagers what they need."

Albertson has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, the Agency for International Development, UNESCO and other agencies on projects dealing with water and sanitation, water resource development, village development, small industry development and research and education. Albertson continues to be active in education, research and outreach at Colorado State.

"Maury Albertson's work has been enormously influential on a global scale," said Neil Grigg, department head in civil engineering at Colorado State. "His dedication to education and to his fellow man is untiring. The programs Maury has initiated continue to expand and help us address many of the international challenges we face."

The International Education and Development Symposium will run 1:30-5 p.m. in Room 228 of the Lory Student Center. The symposium is free and no registration is required. Presentations will offer insight into the start of the Peace Corps, the evolution of Colorado State's international program, the foreign aid program and the founding of the Asian Institute of Technology. The program schedule follows.
