New York Becomes Classroom For Colorado State University Students
Thursday, March 5, 1998
FORT COLLINS--Thirty-eight Colorado State University
students will learn about the interior workings of the fashion
industry when they travel to New York City March 7-12.
The New York Study Tour is a course offered by the
department of design, merchandising and consumer sciences at
Colorado State. The week-long trip gives students insight into
apparel design, production and merchandising, and brings them
together with representatives of major companies in the
industry.
"This is one of the few opportunities to get into the heart
of the fashion business," said Tina Malcolm, Colorado State
merchandising major who will go on the tour. "As an individual,
it would be hard to talk with so many influential people, but
through the university and its reputation, we'll have the chance
to begin building connections."
The tour will be led by Colorado State faculty and retired
faculty, and will include tours of fashion design and
manufacturing companies including Nicole Miller, JCrew, Miss
Erica and Saks 5th Avenue. Students also will visit Fitzpatrick
Design, a cutting-edge architectural firm specializing in retail
stores design, and Fairchild Publishing, a company that publishes
the major trade journals for the apparel industry.
Representatives from each company will discuss their own work as
well as company operations.
The tour will also include a meeting with Colorado State
alumni working in New York City and trips to the Fashion
Institute of Technology, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a
Broadway production of "The Lion King."
"The course gives students real-world exposure to the
multitude of career opportunities available," said Molly Eckman,
trip co-organizer and associate professor in the department of
design, merchandising and consumer sciences. "Students interact
with people who are working in the industry, and return from the
tour full of new ideas for their own futures."
Colorado State's New York Study Tour began in 1972, and
later became the first of the university's tours to be designated
as an official course.
