Colorado State Hosts Forum On Asian Financial Crisis Feb. 20
Tuesday, February 10, 1998
FORT COLLINS--A panel of national experts will hold a public
forum Feb. 20 to discuss the potential effects of Asia's
financial crisis on the United States and Colorado economies.
The forum, sponsored by Colorado State University's
department of economics, begins at 3 p.m. in Room A-207 of the
Clark Building on campus. The forum is free and open to the
public.
Panelists include Philip F. Bartholomew, director of the
bank research division of the Office of the Comptroller of the
Currency at the U.S. Treasury Department; Colorado State
economics professors Liang-Shing Fan, an authority on Chinese and
Taiwanese economies and Terry Ozawa, an expert on Japanese and
Korean economies; and John Olienyk, associate professor of
finance and real estate who will focus on Thailand and
Indonesia's economic situations. Panel moderator is economics
Professor Ronnie Phillips.
Panel members will give brief statements in the area of
their expertise, followed by a question and answer period with
the audience.
The forum will address how Asia's financial problems may
affect the economies of the United States and Colorado and
whether U.S. taxpayers will ultimately pay for the bailout of
Asian countries in financial crisis. Panel members also will
explore whether the United States should support the policy role
of the International Monetary Fund in economic crises, if
interest rates will be affected and how future financial crises
could be avoided in the future.
"The Asian financial crisis has widespread implications both
here and abroad," Phillips said. "This forum provides a wonderful
opportunity for local businesses and the public to understand the
dynamics of this situation and how it may affect certain sectors
of the U.S. and Colorado economies."
