Colorado State University And Fort Collins Community Celebrate Black History Month

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University and the Fort Collins community will join to celebrate Black History Month with speakers, performances, workshops and other special activities throughout February.

The theme for the month-long series of events is "Gaining Wisdom Through Education, Experience and Empowerment." Events are planned by the Black History Month Committee at Colorado State.

Committee president Vernichel Tharps said,"I would like to send out a challenge the university campus and surrounding community to truly embrace the messages and values of events like Black History Month. Strive to gain wisdom through experiencing these aspects, searching for meaning year-round, and celebrating the essence of culture."

Highlights of Black History Month will include a keynote speech by best-selling author and political activist Elaine Brown. The talk, titled "Experiencing the Past, Empowering the Future," will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Lory Student Center Theatre, followed by a reception and book signing in the Lory Student Center Sunken Lounge. Brown was the only woman to head the Black Panther Party and continues to work against race, gender and class disparity. Tickets are $7 for non-Colorado State students and are available at the box office in the Lory Student Center on campus.

Paul Chambers, Colorado State alumnus and civil rights activist, will speak at the Alumni Weekend Luncheon at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 in Room 228 of the Lory Student Center. As a student at Colorado State in the 1960s, Chambers spearheaded efforts to increase minority enrollment and to improve opportunities for minorities on campus. Events also include Zeta Phi Beta Sorority's Second Annual Charity Ball at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Marriott Hotel in Fort Collins. The evening will include dinner, music and dancing. Cost is $25 per person or $45 per couple. Proceeds will benefit the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation. For tickets, call Black Student Services at (970) 491-5781.

"Womyn with Wings," a play that explores the suffering, challenges and victories of women from around the world, will be presented at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Lory Student Center Theatre. Tickets are $7 for non-Colorado State students and are available at the box office in the Lory Student Center.

Feb. 10 Cupid Connection, a Valentine's Day event presented by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., 8 p.m., Lory Student Center Cherokee Park Room. Feb. 13 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
