Colorado State University And Fort Collins Community Celebrate Black History Month
Friday, January 30, 1998
FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University and the Fort Collins
community will join to celebrate Black History Month with
speakers, performances, workshops and other special activities
throughout February.
The theme for the month-long series of events is "Gaining
Wisdom Through Education, Experience and Empowerment." Events are
planned by the Black History Month Committee at Colorado State.
Committee president Vernichel Tharps said,"I would like to
send out a challenge the university campus and surrounding
community to truly embrace the messages and values of events like
Black History Month. Strive to gain wisdom through experiencing
these aspects, searching for meaning year-round, and celebrating
the essence of culture."
Highlights of Black History Month will include a keynote
speech by best-selling author and political activist Elaine
Brown. The talk, titled "Experiencing the Past, Empowering the
