Colorado State University's Generations Week Provides Support, Information And Recognition For Non-Traditional Students

Monday, January 26, 1998

FORT COLLINS--The abundance of experiences offered by non- traditional students will be highlighted Jan. 30-Feb.8 in "Sharing Our Lives, Shaping Our Community," a program that celebrates lifelong learning at Colorado State University.

Events throughout the week will feature discussions, films and talks geared toward assisting non-traditional students and their families. Non-traditional students are learners who do not fit the typical post-high school student profile in regard to age, educational background, marital status or parental status. At Colorado State, 25.4 percent of undergraduates are 23 years of age or older.

"The Generations program allows our non-traditional students to truly shine as vital participants in the Colorado State community and the world beyond the university," said Marsha Benedetti, program coordinator. "The week-long program will provide adult learners with a rich source of resources and support they can use to continue their lifelong learning."

The keynote event is a talk by Derek Okubo from 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Lory Student Center Cherokee Park Room. Okubo, who is director of the Community Assistance Team for the National Civic League in Denver, will discuss "Creating Positive and Lasting Community Change."

A reception will be held prior to the keynote discussion from 6-7 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Cherokee Park Room.

Okubo incorporates his learning as a human service provider, a father, a husband and a community builder in his presentations. During his talk, Okubo will focus on those factors in addition to the individuals he meets in communities, their challenges and their successful practices in creating positive and lasting community change.
