Colorado State Picks New Athletic Director

Wednesday, December 24, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University has selected Tim Weiser as the new director of athletics at the university.

"We are extremely pleased to have been able to recruit and hire a person with the talent level and experience of Tim Weiser to be the next director of athletics," said Colorado State President Albert C. Yates. "We are very confident that Tim has the leadership skills and ability to continue and improve upon the level of success we've experienced in our entire athletic department."

Weiser, athletic director at Eastern Michigan University since 1993, said he became interested in the Colorado State job because of the university's overall reputation and its athletic programs.

"One of the first things that attracted me to Colorado State is its strong reputation, both athletically and academically. When I recently met with some of the staff in the athletic department and the coaches, I saw a program that is in very solid shape," Weiser said. "This is not a fixer- upper, but a house that is in order. I'm looking forward to the challenge of working to improve an already first-rate program."

Weiser will attend the Holiday Bowl and plans to meet with athletic department staff, alumni, university boosters and media during his visit to San Diego.

"There's a lot of support for Colorado State athletics, and the WAC is a conference that in recent years has done a lot to put itself on the map. At the same time, Colorado State has established itself as one of the top programs in the WAC," Weiser said. "When you combine all that with that attraction of Fort Collins for me and my family, this is obviously a very good fit for us. I'm excited about the opportunity."

Weiser came to Eastern Michigan after having served as director of athletics at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., from 1988-93, and as associate athletic director at Wichita State University. He has a bachelor's and master's degrees from Emporia State University in Kansas.

Jud Harper, chairman of the search committee and the university administrator that oversees the athletic department, said Weiser's track record was a key factor in his hiring.

"If you look at what Tim has done during his career, you see a series of successes. At Eastern Michigan he's improved the season ticket sales and the quality of scheduling while also focusing on expanding the support base in community," Harper said. "In Tim, we have the kind of person who will be committed to continuing the success of CSU athletics while still maintaining the highest ethical standards. We're thrilled about him joining our university and our community."

Weiser will begin at Colorado State in late January. He will earn an annual base salary of $120,000. Weiser, 39, is married and has two children.
