Colorado State Hosts Hank Brown Leadership Conference Dec. 13

Tuesday, December 9, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Students at Colorado State University and the public at large will have an opportunity to hear how four prominent Coloradans became leaders in politics, religion, the judicial system, athletics--and in life.

Colorado State's College of Agricultural Sciences will host the Hank Brown Leadership Conference from 7:30 a.m.-noon Dec.13 at the University Park Holiday Inn, 425 W. Prospect Road, Fort Collins. The event is free and open to the public.

Guest speakers are Hank Brown, former U.S. Senator and recently-appointed president of the University of Northern Colorado; Jerry McMorris, president, chairman and CEO of the Colorado Rockies baseball team; Rebecca Love Kourlis, Colorado Supreme Court Justice; and Rev. Johnny Square, chaplain of Colorado State's football and basketball teams and a former Ram football player.

Speakers will touch on numerous subjects related to leadership, including how to be a flexible leader; the art of balancing a family, successful career and ambition; the need for leadership in the 21st century; and establishing a value system as a leader.

This inaugural event was named in honor of Brown for his commitment to the College of Agricultural Sciences and his long history of involvement with the National Western Stock Show, which is a conference co-sponsor along with the Colorado Rockies Charity Fund and the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation.

"It's extremely important to provide an opportunity to expose our students to the leaders of today so that we can assist them in becoming the leaders of tomorrow," said Jim Heird, associate dean for the College of Agricultural Sciences. "I am pleased that leaders in the Colorado community have supported our efforts to create a venue for discussing the virtues of leadership and am grateful for our continued partnership with representatives of the National Western Stock Show, who were instrumental in bringing this conference to fruition."

Pat Grant, president and CEO of the National Western Stock Show, said that creating the conference with the College of Agricultural Sciences was viewed by his organization as a way to make role models accessible to youth of all ages.

"We believe that a crucial part of one's education is to learn about leadership, not only the concepts and experiences, but perspectives on how to develop and nurture future leaders," Grant said. "We also are proud to name this conference in honor of Hank Brown, a respected leader in Colorado politics and a long-time business executive at Monfort. It is exciting to be able to provide an opportunity for students to learn about the principles of leadership from those who embody its true meaning."

No registration is required for the conference. For more information, call (970) 491-6432.
