Henry Moore Exhibition, Activity Center For Children Open At Colorado State University's Hatton Gallery

Monday, October 27, 1997

FORT COLLINS--An exhibition of prints and maquettes by renowned British artist Henry Moore opens at Colorado State University Nov. 3 at the Hatton Gallery in the Visual Arts Building. The exhibition, which runs through Dec. 5, will open with a reception 7-9 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Hatton Gallery.

Spanning more than three decades of the artist's career, "The Sculptor's Line: Henry Moore Prints and Maquettes from the William S. Fairfield Collection" features 27 of Moore's most significant graphic works and five bronze maquettes completed between 1950 and 1982.

Born into a coal-mining family in Yorkshire, England, in 1898, Moore earned international notoriety primarily for his anthropomorphic abstract sculpture. He was a productive draftsman throughout his life, and studied the subjects of his sculptures through prints and drawings. Maquettes--small, three-dimensional working models--served as an intermediary step between his prints and drawings of sculptural forms and their ultimate realization on a monumental scale.

In conjunction with the exhibit, art education students at Colorado State have organized a hands-on activity center for children in the Hatton Gallery.

"The activity center allows kids to experience the many forms and shapes of art as a creative process," said Patrick Fahey, assistant professor of art. "Kids can experiment with print making, draw in sketchbooks, watch videos geared toward youth, and play with found objects like pieces of wood and other oddball things."

The activity center is free and open during regular Hatton Gallery hours, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday.

The works in the Henry Moore exhibit are drawn from the William S. Fairfield Collection and represent more than 15 years of collecting by Fairfield. The exhibit is curated by Andrew Stevens, Curator of Prints and Drawings at Elvehjem Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, the exhibit is toured by ExhibitsUSA, an organization whose purpose is to create access to an array of arts and humanities exhibitions, nurture the development and understanding of diverse art forms and cultures, and encourage the expanding depth and breadth of cultural life in local communities.
