Community Gathers For Discussions, Workshops During Colorado State University's Men's Issues Awareness Days Oct. 29-Nov. 3

Wednesday, October 22, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Men, women, students and faculty in the university and Fort Collins community will have the chance to immerse themselves in a wealth of topics at the fourth annual Men's Issues Awareness Days Oct. 29-Nov. 3.

"Men's Issues: The Next Generation" features presentations and workshops on mentoring, men and work, the history of the men's movement, relationship and intimacy issues, men's spirituality and liberation, and diversity and multicultural issues.

"The sessions in our program continue to speak to both women and men and the dynamic interplay of social roles and expectations," said Jacob Brumfield, graduate student and member of the planning committee. "Historically, the men's movement has been initiated by middle-aged males in their personal and social explorations. We want to bring the dialogue to the younger generation of men and women. We also want to stress that women play an important part in the continuing dialogue and in our annual program."

"We've created a program that will interest men of all ages and all backgrounds," said Sam Sappington, co-coordinator of the event and psychologist at the University Counseling Center. "More than ever, men are concerned about a wide range of issues, and the need to openly discuss those issues is as strong as ever, too. I think the program will help men throughout the community become better informed and more comfortable talking about the issues they're dealing with today."

Sponsors include Asian/Pacific American Student Services, Black Student Services, El Centro Student Services, The Career Center, Division of Student Affairs, Lory Student Center Diversity Grants Fund, Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Hartshorn Health Service, University Counseling Center, Office of Women's Programs and Studies, Fort Collins Fort Fund, Fort Collins Human Rights Office and the Plymouth Congregational Church Social Concerns Committee.
