Colorado State University Floods The Oval With Food Oct. 16
Monday, October 13, 1997
FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University will experience a
flood of food Oct. 16 during the eleventh annual Cans Around the
Oval benefit.
This year's theme for the campus-wide food drive, "Flood the
Oval with Food," reflects upon the outstanding efforts by the
Fort Collins community following the flood on July 28. During the
week-long food drive, university students, faculty and staff will
be asked to donate non-perishable, canned food items to the
Larimer County Food Distribution Center. The cans then will be
placed around the perimeter of the Oval Oct. 16.
About 110 green barrels will be distributed to buildings
around campus during the week of Oct. 13 so that students can
drop off canned food items. Student organizations, fraternities,
sororities, residence halls and colleges are challenged to donate
as many cans as possible. Groups that donate the most pounds of
canned food items will be formally recognized.
University volunteers, in coordination with the Office of
Community Services, will collect and weigh food from 10 a.m.-
2 p.m. Oct. 16. As the food is delivered to the Oval, it will be
placed around the quarter-mile long Oval at Colorado State. A
closing ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on the Oval to
recognize organizations for large donations.
Last year's Cans Around the Oval food drive generated 26,775
pounds of canned goods, which provided 15,393 meals to Larimer
County residents. This year's goal is to collect 27,000 pounds of
canned food items.
Held in conjunction with World Food Day, Cans Around the
Oval is sponsored by the Office of Community Services, Classified
Personnel Council, University Health Services, University
Counseling Services, Office of International Education,
International Student Services and the Food Distribution Center
of Larimer County.
"Cans Around the Oval is a wonderful opportunity for all of
CSU to come together as a community," said Lisa Leonardo,
assistant director for the Office of Community Services. "After
the flood, we've seen the tremendous healing impact of the
community uniting around a common cause."
Winners from the 1996 Cans Around the Oval were Aggie
Village (Apartment Life), Pi Kappa Alpha (Fraternity), Parmelee
Hall (Residence Hall), Chi Omega (Sorority), and Air Force/ROTC
(Student Organization).
