Deadline To Register For Birds Of Prey Courses Set For Oct. 30

Monday, September 29, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Bird watchers and other members of the public are invited to learn about Colorado's birds of prey in a three- part course beginning Nov. 1.

The courses, sponsored by Colorado State University's Rocky Mountain Raptor Program and the Colorado Division of Wildlife, run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 1, 8 and 22 at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, 300 W. Drake Road, Room A-221.

Raptor Program Director Judy Scherpelz will teach the courses. Scherpelz said the curriculum is designed to give bird enthusiasts and students a basic understanding of the physiology of birds of prey, issues that affect their habitat and insight into their behavior in the wild.

Subjects to be discussed in each session include the following.

* Session One, Nov. 1 -- Lectures and demonstrations on the anatomy and physiology of birds of prey, courtship and breeding, population trends, migration and environmental issues.

* Session Two, Nov. 8 -- Habits and identifiable characteristics of individual species, including hawks, falcons, eagles and owls. A slide presentation and live bird demonstrations will be used.

* Session Three, Nov. 22 -- Field trip to a variety of habitats throughout northern Colorado, concentrating on how and where to observe birds of prey, field identification of birds, local bird-watching areas and birds of interest.

Individuals must attend one of the first two sessions in order to participate in the third-session field trip. Cost of each session is $50, or $125 for all three courses. All fees help support the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program, a non-profit project that treats and rehabilitates injured birds of prey and presents educational programs about birds of prey at Colorado public schools.

The deadline to register for the course is Oct. 30. For more information or to register, call (970) 491-0398.
