Hewlett-Packard President And Ceo To Address Students, Business Community At Colorado State Business Day Oct. 8

Thursday, September 25, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University's College of Business will welcome Lewis E. Platt, president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Co., an international leader in electronics manufacturing, as keynote speaker at the 19th annual Business Day on Oct. 8.

Platt will speak at 8 p.m. at the University Park Holiday Inn, 425 W. Prospect Road. The public is welcome to attend Platt's speech and all other Business Day events. The day-long series of free programs will feature speakers on sports marketing, international business and telecommunications.

Morning presentations by speakers, scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, will be held in the Lory Student Center at Colorado State. (See schedule of speakers below.) In addition to his evening speech, Platt will attend a "rap session" with business students, faculty and the public at 4:30 p.m. at the University Park Holiday Inn, followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. and a banquet at 6:15 p.m. Reservations for the reception and banquet are required. Corporate tables for six guests are available at $250 per table; each table sponsorship allows two Colorado State student hosts to attend. Individual reservations cost $20.

Platt joins an impressive list of past Capstone speakers for Business Day, including former President Ronald Reagan and the late publishing tycoon Malcolm Forbes.

The CEO of Hewlett-Packard joined the company in 1966 and held a variety of management posts in the medical-products operations prior to becoming general manager of the Waltham, Mass., division in 1974. He was general manager of HP's Analytical Group from 1980-1984 and was elected a vice president in 1983. From 1984-1988 he managed various parts of HP's computer business.

In 1987, Platt was elected executive vice president. In 1988 he was named to oversee the Computer Products sector and in 1990 he was appointed head of the Computer Systems Organization. He was elected president and chief executive officer and a member of the board of directors in 1992. The board elected Platt to succeed company founder David Packard as chairman of the board when Packard announced his retirement in 1993.

Platt's visit corresponds with the dedication of the Classroom and Technology Wing of Rockwell Hall, the new home of Colorado State's College of Business. With help from a $1 million gift from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and from 700 other private donations, the 25,198 square-foot addition will feature state-of-the-art technology to deliver class lectures and encourage interactive learning. Hewlett-Packard has been a generous contributor to the College of Business, providing more than $1.74 million for new facilities and equipment. The company has given a total of $11 million to the university overall.

The Rockwell wing includes six multimedia classrooms for business classes and a high-tech Hewlett-Packard Student Computer Laboratory featuring 62 computer stations. The addition also will house the Computer Information Systems department and provides centralized office space for graduate students and student support services.
