Colorado State Names Vice Provost For Undergraduate Studies

Tuesday, August 26, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University has appointed a vice provost for undergraduate studies to oversee undergraduate student programs, including student retention, recruitment and the Honors Program.

Laurie Hayes, associate dean of curricular and student affairs for the College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, will begin her new position at Colorado State on Sept. 8.

As vice provost for undergraduate studies, Hayes will be responsible for the university's general education program and serve as liaison for undergraduate projects to the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. Her responsibilities also include summer session and support programs for undergraduate students such as the Help/Success Center.

"Laurie comes to Colorado State with considerable experience and expertise in the area of undergraduate studies," said David Young, provost and academic vice president. "She will be an outstanding addition to the Provost's office."

Hayes has spent 30 years in academic and administrative positions in higher education. Her academic career began in 1967 as a speech instructor at the University of Wisconsin. From 1972 to 1976, Hayes served as assistant to the director of the honors program in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She joined the staff at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, as an assistant professor in the speech department in 1977 and has held numerous academic and administrative positions at the university. As associate dean for the College of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences since 1992, Hayes has provided general leadership and administration for undergraduate curriculum, admissions and recruitment efforts and student services such as orientation, registration, academic advising, publications, scholarships, honors programs and other activities.

Hayes earned a doctorate degree in communication arts and a master's degree in speech from the University of Wisconsin and bachelor's degrees in speech and theater arts education from the University of Minnesota.

Hayes replaces David Clark, who left the provost's office in January to take a position as associate vice chancellor of the Colorado State University System. Hayes will earn $115,000 a year.
