Colorado State University Opens Buildings, Classes To Be Held

Wednesday, July 30, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Two more buildings opened Wednesday and summer session classes will resume Thursday following damage resulting from floods earlier this week, Colorado State University officials said.

Officials relocated approximately 50 summer classes out of flood-damaged buildings and into new locations. Crews have posted notices on building doors outlining relocated classes. A list of those classes also will be included in Thursday editions of the campus newspaper, The Collegian, and the Fort Collins Coloradoan. Students may also call (970) 491-7212.

"The university is moving ahead with business and is operating," said Jud Harper, acting president and vice president for research and information technology. "We will be up and ready for fall semester August 25th."

Harper also said students should not experience any serious interruptions in services and that the Lory Student Center book store will be replenished and open for the start of classes.

Crews also are working to remove the estimated 500,000 books that suffered damage in the Morgan Library. Camilla Alire, dean of libraries, estimates that 80 percent of those materials will be salvageable and stressed those books were damaged, not destroyed.

"I am confident the Morgan Library will be open and able to meet campus needs by August 25th--the start of the fall semester," Alire said.

After completing damage assessments and safety inspections Wednesday, officials reopened Spruce Hall and the Centers for Disease Control at the Foothills Campus. Spruce Hall houses continuing education programs, admissions, a copy center and other services. No classes or faculty offices are housed in Spruce Hall. (Please see updated list of closed buildings)

Thirteen buildings on campus remain closed. Buildings are opening daily following structural inspection and general cleanup. Crews worked through the night Tuesday pumping water out of all affected buildings and will complete water removal by Thursday. Officials expect to open four more buildings later this week.

To facilitate cleanup and safety inspections, entry into any closed building on campus is not permitted without authorization of environmental health and facilities staff.

In the days since the flood, Colorado State has received an outpouring of inquiries into volunteer opportunities as well as opportunities for donations of materials, services and financial support. To accommodate those generous offers, Colorado State has established a central volunteer and donation phone line. The number is (970) 491-7328.

Monetary contributions may be made to the CSU Flood Relief Fund, fund #47933; or the Morgan Library, fund #47943. Checks should be made out and mailed to the CSU Foundation, P.O. Box 1870, Fort Collins, CO 80522-1870.

The university's counseling center is open and available to provide psychological and emotional support to any individuals, including students, staff and faculty affected by the flooding. Center hours are 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for walk-in consultations. Call (970) 491-6053. After hours support is available by calling (970) 491-7111.
