Cooperative Extension Selects Assistant Director For 4-H Youth Development

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University Cooperative
Extension Director Milan Rewerts announced that Douglas L. Steele
has been selected as Assistant Director of 4-H Youth Development
for Colorado State Cooperative Extension.
"We genuinely are pleased Doug will join the Extension team
in Colorado," Rewerts said. "His 16 years of Extension youth-
development experience will be a tremendous asset to Colorado 4-H
as we continue to look for innovative ways to provide educational
programs and experiences to the youth of our state."
Steele, currently an Extension 4-H youth development
specialist at Purdue University, received a bachelor's degree in
animal science/agri-business from Panhandle State University,
master's in agriculture with an emphasis in agronomy and
horticulture from West Texas State University, and doctorate in
educational human resource development with an emphasis in
Extension education from Texas A&M University.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Steele served as
Extension 4-H youth development specialist, Extension associate
in community and economic development, and county Extension agent
in Hutchison and Potter counties in Texas, all with Texas A&M
University. Steele also has experience in grant writing, distance education,
leadership development, and fiscal and volunteer management.
Throughout his Extension career, Steele has received the
Superior Service Award for the Safe Food for the Hungry program
from Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service;
Group Award for Excellence for Food Assistance Programs from the
USDA; Team Award for Educational Materials from the Purdue
University Extension Specialist Association; and the State
Turfgrass Communications Award and Outstanding New Agent
Recognition Award from the Texas County Agricultural Agents
Association.
"I am pleased to be a part of 4-H in Colorado and look
forward to building on the foundation already established for
youth in the state," said Steele, who will join the Colorado
State Cooperative Extension staff Aug. 1. "I will
enthusiastically join the staff and volunteers to continue the
traditions and high standards of the 4-H program while striving
to meet the emerging needs of today's young people," he added.
"The more than 85,000 youths who participate in the 4-H
Youth Development Program annually will benefit from Doug's
leadership as he develops strategies to further extend the many
excellent resources of Colorado State University," Rewerts said.
"Broad dissemination of university resources is the cornerstone
of the land-grant university mission, and we are fortunate to
have a professional of Doug's caliber leading that effort on
behalf of the university and Colorado's young people."
