FORT COLLINS--Internationally renowned experts in the design industry will be on campus at Colorado State University's Fourth Annual Bohannon Summer Series in Design. The workshop series, held May 20-June 27, will include instructional classes in silkscreening, embroidery and couture design techniques for apparel or design enthusiasts.

The series is held in memory of Kathryn T. Bohannon, a Colorado State graduate student in apparel design who was killed in a car accident in 1992.

"These workshops in fashion and fabric design would have intrigued Kathryn, who had an intense desire to cultivate beauty and grace in all of her endeavors, most of all in fashion design," said Diane Sparks, associate professor of apparel design at Colorado State and coordinator of the Bohannon Series.

The series will feature three sessions, including a workshop that teaches small business entrepreneurs how to use computerized graphic software to embroider emblems on clothing and apparel. Companies such as Nike, Champion and Oshkosh B"Gosh use this type of software to create embroidered logos on clothing.

Joel and Charla Gaglio, husband and wife team with 25 years of experience in the textile design industry, will teach a workshop on silkscreen techniques June 16-20. Participants will learn how to develop a single design into a repetitive pattern with flowing color designs on large pieces of fabric. The Gaglios own an international textile design company, Research Design, and are known for their work throughout Asia, Europe and the United States.

Claire Shaeffer, author, lecturer and college instructor, will present the Couture Design Techniques workshop June 1-6. Couture is a custom form of apparel manufacturing in which intensive fitting and human handwork result in garments that are molded for specific individuals. In this session, Shaeffer will focus on how couture techniques are practiced in Paris and Rome.

All workshops are open to fabric and apparel designers, design educators and undergraduate or graduate students. No previous experience is necessary for most workshops and participants may earn Colorado State credit. Cost for each workshop is $600-$800 for the public, but reduced rates may be available for full-time Colorado State University students.

The series of workshops include:

* Couture Design Techniques, June 1-6. Instructor: Claire Shaeffer.

* Repeat Fabric Design, June 16-20. Instructors: Joel and Charla Gaglio.

* CAD Graphics Embroidery, June 16-27. Instructors: Gerry Prater and Toby Diamond.

The Bohannon Summer Series in Design is supported by Bohannon's husband, Dave Folkes, the Bohannon family and Don and Maria Johnson of the C.W. Bixler Family Foundation.

Registration deadline is May 1. For more information, contact Diane Sparks at (970) 491-5360 or e-mail at sparks@cahs.colostate.edu.
