Colorado State University Selected To Appear In The Publication, '1997-1998 Honor Roll For Character-Building Colleges'
Wednesday, April 9, 1997
FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University this month was named
as one of the top character-building universities in the nation
by the prestigious John Templeton Foundation.
Colorado State joins the Air Force Academy as the only
schools in Colorado selected to appear in the foundation's
biennial publication, "1997-1998 Honor Roll for Character-
Building Colleges."
As part of the organization's selection process, Colorado
State submitted a brief statement that summarized the
university's commitment to character building.
Colorado State also was evaluated on an essay that detailed
its character-building activities and programs. A six-member
panel composed of national higher-education officials reviewed
each school's nomination materials to help determine the extent
to which the institution inspires students to develop and
strengthen their moral reasoning skills; encourages spiritual
growth and moral values; provides community-building experiences;
advocates a drug-free lifestyle; and conducts a critical
assessment of its character-building programs and activities.
Schools chosen to be listed in the Honor Roll were selected
without regard to size or affiliation. Previous honor rolls have
recognized 124 colleges and universities nationwide.
This fall, the foundation plans to distribute more than
65,000 copies of the Honor Roll publication without charge to
public libraries, high-school guidance counselors and interested
parents and students throughout the United States. The Honor Roll
also is distributed at various higher-education related national
conventions.
"It's a great honor to be recognized as a character-building
university," said Colorado State University President Albert
Yates. "Being selected also is a tribute to administrators,
faculty and staff who work very hard to provide students with
character-building programs and activities through offices on
campus, including Community Services, Center for Drug and Alcohol
Education and Residence Life."
The John Templeton Foundation, located in Radnor, Pa., was
established in 1987 by international investment manager Sir John
Templeton. The foundation's activities include studies, award
programs and publications that promote character development of
young people in secondary schools, colleges and universities.
