Wednesday, March 5, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University will host the fourth annual Women of Color in Higher Education Conference, "Sisters: Dancing In, Among, and Between Cultures," March 13 and 14 on the Fort Collins campus.

About 500 women from around the state will attend the conference. In recognition of the two-day conference, Fort Collins Mayor Ann Azari has proclaimed March 13 and 14 as Colorado Women of Color Days in Fort Collins.

The two-day seminar features keynote sessions, workshops and panel discussions designed to cultivate professional network opportunities, develop mentoring relationships and provide a forum to address the critical issues that impact the lives of women of color in Colorado higher education. Workshop topics range from "In Search of the Yellow Brick Road Down the State Classified Career Path" to "Women of Color as Mentors."

Dawn Person, assistant professor of higher education and co- coordinator of student personnel programs at the Teachers' College at Columbia University, will deliver the opening keynote address, "Sisters Creating a New Dance Through Coalition Building," at 2 p.m. March 13 in the Lory Student Center.

Other keynote speakers include Sumiko T. Hennessy, executive director of the Asian Pacific Development Center in Denver; Ruth Burgos-Sasscer, chancellor of the Houston Community College System; and Cecilia Fire Thunder, a national consultant and trainer for health promotions programs, spirituality and community wellness. Fire Thunder is affiliated with the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

"We are honored to host the fourth annual Women of Color in Higher Education Conference because it really provides an opportunity to identify issues that impact the educational, professional and personal lives of ethnically diverse women," said Cheryl Presley, associate vice president for student affairs and conference planning committee co-chairwoman. "This conference recognizes the necessity of a support base for women of color in higher education and provides a unique opportunity and experience for faculty, staff and students who are interested in multiculturalism and diversity."

Registration is $35; $10 for students. Registration is limited to 500. Early registration is strongly encouraged. For more information, call Conference Services at (970) 491-7501.

The annual Women of Color in Higher Education Conference has grown from about 150 women in 1994 to more than 400 women in 1996. Conferences were previously hosted by Metropolitan State College, University of Northern Colorado and the University of Southern Colorado.
