Colorado State's Veterinary Teaching Hospital Provides Free Pet Dental Exams

Friday, February 14, 1997

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital will provide free pet dental health exams Feb. 22 in observance of National Pet Dental Health Month.

The free exams will be available to the public from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. by appointment at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, 300 W. Drake Road.

Veterinary students and faculty will examine pets' teeth for possible problems and offer pet owners advice on how to correct problems. Owners will receive a written evaluation from the hospital explaining their pet's dental health. Hospital staff also will give instruction on how to ensure proper dental care is being done at home, as well as hand out materials about pet dental care.

"This is the third year we've participated in National Pet Dental Health Month, " said Lynne Keel, assistant professor of clinical sciences. "Our veterinary students not only gain valuable experience, but it's also a great opportunity for pet owners to learn more about their pet's dental health."

Along with the free examinations, the hospital also will sponsor a coloring contest and hand out entries for the "Draw a Healthy Smile" poster contest for children ages 3- 17. Two winners from the hospital's contest will advance to a statewide competition. All entries must be received by Feb. 28 at the small animal desk located inside the front entrance of the veterinary hospital.

National Pet Dental Health Month was created by the Veterinary Dental Society, the American Veterinary Dental College, the American Veterinary Medical Association and Hills Pet Foods to increase awareness of dental health in dogs and cats. As in humans, periodontal disease is the main reason for tooth loss in dogs and cats, but is preventable. Home dental care, coupled with professional care, can give pets a healthy smile along with sweet breath.

To make an appointment, call the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at (970) 491-7101.
