Monday, January 6, 1997

FORT COLLINS--A scholarship honoring the memory of Colorado State alumnus Gordon Skinner was recently established in the university's department of electrical engineering.

Applications for the Gordon Skinner scholarship will be accepted after Jan. 1 for the fall 1997 semester. The Gordon Skinner scholarship is one of about 100 awarded by the College of Engineering and administered through the associate dean for undergraduate programs in the college.

Skinner, a 1985 electrical engineering graduate of Colorado State, was killed in a climbing accident in 1995. He graduated with valedictorian honors in 1981 from Canon City High School and received a bachelor's degree at Colorado State. Skinner graduated magna cum laude from the university.

Skinner received a National Science Foundation Fellowship for graduate studies and went on to complete a master's degree in physics in 1989 from the University of Texas in Austin. Skinner lived in Lyons, Colo., and helped establish QUALCOMM Inc. in Boulder. He served as engineering manager in the company at the time of his death. He frequently returned to the College of Engineering to recruit top graduates as QUALCOMM employees.

The $2,000 Gordon Skinner Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding junior or senior electrical engineering student with financial need. It covers approximately 80 percent of tuition and fees at Colorado State. Preference will be given to students who are also involved with music. Skinner was drummer for the jazz band at Colorado State.

The scholarship was first awarded for the 1997 spring semester to Tam-Trang Tran. Tam-Trang Tran has a 3.9 grade point average and graduates in May.
