FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University today announced the
signing of a formal agreement with the Eastern Shoshone tribe to
link tribal members with the educational resources of the
university.
Colorado State and the tribe recently agreed to collaborate
on educational programs that encourage the success of Eastern
Shoshone students. The university and the tribe plan to create
new initiatives, provide academic support to assist students and
seek private funding for scholarships. The agreement is the first
step in a major effort to both increase diversity on campus and
produce greater numbers of Eastern Shoshone professionals in
government and private industry.
"We are excited about the opportunity to work with the
Eastern Shoshone tribe to meet our collective goals and share
resources, create educational opportunities and enhance the
cultural diversity of our campus," said Keith Miser, Colorado
State's vice president for student affairs. "This agreement
represents a foundation for the future as we strive to create a
positive campus climate and meet the needs of the Native American
population in higher education."
The Eastern Shoshone tribe is located on the 2.8 million-
acre Wind River Reservation in west-central Wyoming--the third
largest Native American reservation in the United States. The
goal of the Shoshone Tribal Education Program is to give tribal
members the opportunity to pursue higher education.
