Yates Earns An 'A' In State Board Of Agriculture's Annual Performance Review
Wednesday, December 4, 1996
FORT COLLINS--The State Board of Agriculture applauded
Colorado State University President Al Yates today for his
ongoing work to make the university more responsive and
successful.
In its annual review of Yates' performance, the board once
again expressed confidence in his leadership of the university
and praised the institution's progress over the past 12 months.
"The completion of the Morgan Library project is just one
example of how Dr. Yates has been able to transform long-term
problems into creative solutions," board President Romaine
Pacheco said. "That same energy and commitment now are fueling
the university's drive to reform the undergraduate experience,
diversify its funding base and build partnerships with other
institutions and people around the state."
Pacheco also noted that Colorado State faculty and staff--
while they may not always agree with the president--respect and
appreciate his work on behalf of the institution and his
commitment to shared governance. The board reaffirmed its support
of the president's goals and objectives as the university
addresses the difficult challenges of a changing higher education
environment.
"Dr. Yates has played a significant role in creating
institutional awareness of--and progress toward--the Board's
highest priorities," Pacheco said. She explained the board is
especially pleased with the attention paid to refinement and
improvement of the undergraduate curriculum; the balance of
individual autonomy with institutional accountability;
diversification of the university's resource base; and the need
to preserve excellence in the research portion of Colorado
State's mission.
"These areas are of particular concern for the Board and the
people of Colorado, and Dr. Yates has been untiring in his
willingness to carry this message to the campus community and
seek action," Pacheco said.
Yates, president of Colorado State since 1990, also serves
as chancellor of the Colorado State University System, which
includes Fort Lewis College in Durango and the University of
Southern Colorado in Pueblo.
Among the highlights of Yates' tenure this past year,
Pacheco cited the following accomplishments:
* continued renovation of the campus physical plant,
including completion of the addition to Morgan Library,
renovation of the Lory Student Center, expansion of
Rockwell Hall, restoration of many older campus
buildings and planning for renewal of engineering
facilities;
* continued success in fund-raising, including new
records for private giving around campaigns for the
library, athletic facilities and the Construction
Management program;
* strengthened relations across the state, including
relations with the Colorado Legislature, which has
supported the university with strong operating and
capital budgets for the past several years;
* progress toward overhauling the undergraduate
curriculum to make it more streamlined and effective;
* increased enrollment, including continued increases in
enrollment of ethnic minority students;
* a record-breaking year in intercollegiate athletics
that spotlighted the enhanced support and success of
CSU women's sports;
* breakthrough research and scholarly achievements in all
academic areas;
* and campuswide recognition of the need for change to
remain competitive and responsive.
"Dr. Yates continues to distinguish himself as the leading
spokesperson for higher education in the state of Colorado,"
Pacheco said.
Yates was evaluated at today's board meeting in Fort Collins
based on the following criteria: leadership, planning and
management; ability to foster positive, supportive relationships
among campus groups and external constituencies; and fund-raising
success.
