Colorado State University Participates In World Aids Awareness During Week Of Dec. 1

Monday, November 25, 1996

FORT COLLINS--Colorado State University and several organizations in the city of Fort Collins and Larimer County will join in a national day of action and mourning for people with HIV and AIDS Dec. 1 and throughout the week.

Colorado State's fourth annual observance of World AIDS Day will include a "Day Without Art," the traditional shrouding of various works of art to symbolize the loss of art, life and human creativity because of AIDS. The exhibit and other information will be located in Colorado State's Directions Gallery in the Visual Arts Building Dec. 2-4. Recent drawings and collages by Ruth Pettigrew also will be on display. The Lincoln Center and other local businesses also will cover displayed art Dec. 1.

"'Day Without Art' is a national observance and a reminder to us that AIDS and HIV affect everyone," said Mara Melton, World AIDS Day coordinator at Colorado State. "There are countless talented visual and performing artists whose lives were cut short due to AIDS and this event gives us the chance to think and talk about the complicated and emotional issue of AIDS. Because World AIDS Day occurs on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, we will continue the observance throughout the week."

Melton said on December 1, the traditional observance of World AIDS Day, the Arco Irisito (Little Rainbow) ensemble will perform 3-5 p.m. in the Lincoln Center's Ludlow Room, 417 W. Magnolia. The event is free and open to the public. A reception follows the performance.

Red ribbons will be distributed to all Colorado State employees and residence hall residents. The red ribbon has emerged as an international symbol of compassion for people living with AIDS. Residence halls will sponsor campaigns for students to pledge commitments to safe behaviors to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.

This year, Colorado State will host a video and discussion, "AIDS: A Forum," 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Lory Student Center Virginia Dale Room. The creator of the video, Jerry Grits, will be available for comments. The showing is free and open to the public.

University Health Service is organizing events on campus in conjunction with the university's art department, the Northern Colorado AIDS Project, Larimer County Department of Health and Environment, Lambda Community Center, Front Range Community College, Poudre Valley Hospital and local schools and businesses.
